As major cities globally redefine urban living standards

Relayed from iChongqing.info

The Chinese metropolis of Chongqing recently unveiled its vision for the homes of tomorrow at the 2025 Chongqing Good Housing Exhibition. The showcase demonstrated how innovative design, green materials, and smart technology are merging to create apartments that are more comfortable, energy-efficient, and durable for residents.

This report highlights a global trend where governments and developers are moving beyond basic housing to focus on the long-term well-being of residents. The core idea is that a "good home" should not only look nice but also actively improve daily life and save money over time.

1. New Standards for Space and Light

The exhibition brought government guidelines to life through walk-through model units, emphasizing noticeable improvements in basic structural elements:

  • Higher Ceilings: Future commercial apartment ceilings will increase from the national standard of 3 meters to 3.15 meters. This small change creates a significantly more open, spacious, and airy feel inside the unit.

  • Vertical Gardens: Instead of narrow, traditional balconies, some high-end units featured large, double-height "sky courtyards" spanning nearly 46 square meters. This design blurs the line between indoor and outdoor space, bringing natural light and vertical greenery directly into the living area.

2. The Power of "Invisible" Technology

Perhaps the most crucial innovations showcased were the often-unseen materials and technology designed to enhance long-term comfort and sustainability:

  • Superior Soundproofing: Demonstrations showed how advanced windows—made with glass-fiber reinforced polyurethane instead of standard double-glazing—can drastically reduce loud street noise. Benefit to Residents: This ensures a quieter home environment and can potentially cut summer cooling costs by half due to improved insulation.

  • Long-Term Durability: New technologies are being built into the home's infrastructure:

  • Self-Healing Concrete: This material automatically seals micro-cracks, significantly reducing future maintenance costs and preventing leaks.

    • Low-Noise Drainage Pipes: Essential for high-density buildings, these pipes are designed to reduce the distracting noise of drainage for neighbors.

      • Photovoltaic Tiles: These roof tiles are capable of generating electricity, moving apartments toward energy independence.

      • Nanomaterial Coatings: These hidden coatings resist fire and mold, enhancing the home's safety and longevity.

These innovations play a decisive role in a home's long-term environmental performance and durability, ensuring that the structures are more resilient to the challenges facing modern cities. Local authorities confirm that over 115 such "good-housing" projects have already been launched and well-received in the market.
