Cockroach Problems in Apartments

Types, Causes, and Effective Ways to Get Rid of Cockroaches

Cockroaches are a common hygiene problem that can affect the comfort of apartment residents. In addition to being unpleasant, these insects can carry germs, contaminate food, and trigger allergies. If left untreated, cockroaches can reproduce rapidly and spread to different parts of a building.

Cockroach problems in apartments cannot be solved simply by relying on cleaning staff or Building Management (BM). Effective cockroach control requires awareness and concrete action from all residents, particularly in maintaining the cleanliness of their own units.

Common Types of Cockroaches Found in Indonesia

Several types of cockroaches are commonly found in residential areas and buildings in Indonesia, including:

  • German cockroach (Blattella germanica). Small in size and light brown in color, with two dark stripes behind the head. This species is often found in kitchens, cupboards, and areas close to food sources. German cockroaches reproduce rapidly and are among the most difficult pests to control.
  • American cockroach (Periplaneta americana). Large in size and reddish-brown in color, this species can be found in drains, damp areas, garbage rooms, and parts of buildings with access to drainage systems.
  • Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis). Dark brown to nearly black in color, this species prefers damp and relatively cool places. It can be found in drains, lower levels of buildings, and wet areas.
  • Australian cockroach (Periplaneta australasiae). Reddish-brown in color, with yellowish markings along the edges of its wings. This cockroach can be found in tropical environments, including outdoor areas and places with vegetation.
  • Brown-banded cockroach (Supella longipalpa). Relatively small, with lighter-colored transverse bands across its body. This species can hide in furniture, cupboards, and electronic equipment, including areas that are not particularly damp.

The types of cockroaches found may vary depending on the surrounding environment and building conditions. Identifying the species can help determine the most appropriate control methods.

Why Do Cockroaches Appear in Apartment Units?

Cockroaches need food, water, and hiding places to survive. Inside apartment units, food sources may include crumbs on the floor, leftover food on tables, dirty dishes, uncovered garbage bins, and spilled drinks.

Cockroaches can also hide behind cupboards, underneath refrigerators, in wall cracks, and around pipes and drains. In some cases, they can move between spaces or enter through building service routes and utility openings.

Therefore, maintaining cleanliness inside each unit is essential to reducing the chances of cockroaches surviving and reproducing.

Effective Ways to Get Rid of Cockroaches in Apartments

Cockroach control should begin with everyday habits in each unit. Here are several practical steps residents should take.

1. Always Cover Food and Store Leftovers Properly

Store food in tightly sealed containers. Do not leave food uncovered on dining tables or kitchen counters, especially overnight.

Leftover food should be cleaned up promptly and stored properly or disposed of in a covered garbage bin. Do not leave dirty dishes, crumbs, or spilled drinks unattended for too long.

When cockroaches cannot easily access leftover food, their available food sources are reduced, making the unit less suitable for their survival and reproduction.

2. Regularly Clean the Kitchen and Hidden Areas

Regularly clean floors, kitchen counters, stovetops, the areas underneath refrigerators, and the spaces behind cupboards. Pay attention to corners and crevices that are rarely cleaned, as these can become hiding places for cockroaches.

Make sure garbage bins have lids and that waste is disposed of regularly.

3. Regularly Control Cockroaches Inside Your Own Unit

Do not wait until large numbers of cockroaches become visible. Residents should carry out regular pest control using traps, cockroach baits, or suitable insecticides in accordance with the product instructions.

If cockroaches keep reappearing, check for possible nests or hiding places. If necessary, hire a professional pest control service.

4. Seal Gaps and Repair Leaks

Check for gaps around pipes, doors, walls, and utility routes. Repair water leaks and ensure that kitchens and bathrooms do not remain damp for extended periods.

These measures help reduce entry points, water sources, and hiding places for cockroaches.

Cockroach Problems Are Not the Sole Responsibility of Building Management

One misconception that needs to be addressed is the belief that all cockroach problems in an apartment are the responsibility of Building Management (BM).

BM is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of common areas, managing waste, maintaining building facilities, and controlling pests in areas under its responsibility. However, cleanliness inside individual units is also an essential responsibility of each resident.

Cockroaches do not always originate from common areas. They can also breed inside units where leftover food, uncovered garbage bins, or suitable hiding places are available. Once they multiply, cockroaches can potentially spread to other areas.

Therefore, residents should carry out regular cockroach control inside their own units rather than simply waiting for BM to take action.

Cockroach control is a shared responsibility. BM needs to manage common areas and address pest sources related to building facilities, while residents must maintain cleanliness and control pests inside their respective units.

Resident Awareness Can Significantly Reduce Cockroach Problems

Imagine if every unit consistently stored food in sealed containers, cleaned up leftovers promptly, disposed of garbage regularly, and carried out routine cockroach control. The available food sources and breeding opportunities for cockroaches would be significantly reduced.

If all residents consistently adopt these habits, the cockroach population throughout the apartment could decrease dramatically. The results would be even more effective if BM also implemented a planned pest control program in common areas and along building utility routes.

Cockroach problems cannot be solved by blaming one another. Care, discipline, and cooperation among all parties are needed to maintain a clean, healthy, and comfortable living environment.

Start with your own unit. Cover food, clean up leftovers, dispose of garbage properly, and control cockroaches regularly. Simple habits adopted by every resident can make a significant difference in keeping the entire apartment clean.
